Cozumel Island

Discover the island of Cozumel in the Caribbean Sea, opposite Playa Del Carmen

Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico. It's 39 miles long and 11 miles wide.  It is situated in the Mexican Caribbean Sea, and it faces the Yucatan Peninsula Coast.

You can reach Cozumel by plane (international airport) or by ferry from Playa Del Carmen (40 minutes transit).  The Airport in the well known seaside area of Cancun is the closest to Playa Del Carmen.  It is served by most of the  major international airlines, and an important amount of low cost charter airlines.

Cozumel’s capital is San Miguel, the only city on the island with a population of 80000 inhabitants.  It's a coral island, which has a forest in the middle of it, and which economic activity based mostly on nautical tourism and mainly Scuba diving.

The attractiveness of Cozumel is not recent, in the year 1000, during the post classic Mayan period, Cozumel was already an important economic and religious centre.  The island was situated in the Meso-American maritime route.  Large canoes loaded with feathers, jades  from Honduras, and also those loaded with honey, wax, cotton, and salt from Tulum used to stop there.
