plongče cenotes yucatan

Cenotes: unavoidable, in four words.

Magnificent
  • All along this journey, may it be with diving gear or snorkelling, you will be surprised by the passages from clear to obscure, by the effects of light soaking through the jungle to make its way onto fossils, astonished to feel the sun rays discovering mysteries, zigzagging between stalactites and stalagmites, following roots eluding from the earth like the sacred world of the Mayas.

Unique
  • There is only one place in the world where caves can be explored with nothing more than a level one Open Water. The Yucatan Cenotes are world renown. You cannot miss this.

Easy.
  • Cenote dives are typically shallow dives (15-30ft) The water is soft and extremely calm, inviting you to a world of silence and rest. It is an easier access to scuba diving for all that are uneasy with the sea and its occasional adverse conditions.

Safe
  • The paths that you will borrow are always large enough that two divers may swim alongside each other, always at a maximum of 120 ft from daylight and open air. Your groups will never be more than 4 divers per guide.Contrary to the sea, you can always dive in Cenotes, even if the weather is not favourable. These dives are available all year long.

Where do Cenotes come from?
  • The Yucatan peninsula is a limestone platform that formed millions of years ago. Through years of ice age, the level of the ocean often varied and at numerous occasions, this region was submerged. When the ocean withdrew, caves were formed, abundant rains fell on these formations bringing along with them carbonic acid from the soil and decomposing leafs. This effect dug through the fragile rocks, creating underground passages which water made its way to find the ocean. In this process, stalactites and stalagmites were formed.
  • During the last ice age, oceans were 150 ft below their actual level. About 18000 years ago, the ice started to melt and the ocean level rose to the levels of today, flooding passages that were created, generating an enormous underground river network like no other area on the planet. For the mysterious Mayan civilisation, where their culture blossomed between year 300 to 900, the Cenotes (Dzonot=sacred well) were not only a source of soft water, but also had an important part in their mythology: they represented a window into the hereafter and a key for life after death. There was ceremonies and rituals in honour of the inner-world gods: In certain caves, we still find a few relics.
